 Context

During summer 2020, I interned as a UX Designer & Researcher at OneAmerica on various enterprise products used by the marketing team which includes UX, UI designers & developers. I did research from scratch to finally submit sign-off from OneAmerica Design System. My main goal was to develop a documentation template and content for the Design System.

What is a Design System?

A Design System offers a library of visual styles, components, and other concerns documented by and individual, team or community as code and design tools so that adapting product can be more efficient and cohesive.

OneAmerica design system consists of four main tiers:

  1. Primitives: high-level system patterns, i.e. color, typography, shapes, etc.

  2. Components: containers of system patterns, i.e. cards, modules.

  3. Elements: parts of the system that can not be further broken down, i.e. control inputs, labels.

  4. Code: Code snippets that help developers to locate primitives, components & elements

What I learned:

Not only did I grow as a designer, but I learned the importance of thinking beyond the pixels-as, they transcend time and place. Namely, the pixels we create have ramifications in the real world, and it's critical to consider them while designing.
